Dermatologic Surgery

We offer surgical removal of both benign and cancerous skin lesions, including:

  • Mohs surgery is the most advanced and effective treatment for a variety of skin cancer types. Mohs surgery is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia. On the day of surgery, the surgical site is anesthetized and the skin cancer is removed with a narrow margin of normal skin. The tissue is then brought to the on-site laboratory where it is processed and evaluated under the microscope by Dr. Nabatian. If residual skin cancer is noted at any margin, then additional tissue is removed from the area where skin cancer is still present. This tissue is again processed and evaluated for residual tumor. If skin cancer is still present at the margin, then additional tissue is removed from the affected area. This process is repeated until the entire skin cancer is removed.

  • An excision is a surgical procedure in which either a benign or malignant (cancerous) skin growth is removed under local anesthesia. After the growth is excised, the dermatologic surgeon sutures the wound closed for optimal healing. The excised tissue is then sent to the laboratory to be analyzed by a dermatopathologist. Atypical moles and skin cancers are frequently excised with margins of normal skin to ensure complete removal and cure. Benign growths, such as moles, cysts, and lipomas (“fatty growths”) can also be removed as elective cosmetic procedures. Additionally, cherry angiomas (“red spots”), Seborrheic keratoses, and solar lentigines (“sun spots” or “liver spots”) are other common benign growths that can be removed with simple procedures that usually require no downtime.

  • Cryosurgery is the use of extremely cold temperatures produced by liquid nitrogen to destroy abnormal skin tissue. Cryosurgery can be used to treat benign growths such as warts and seborrheic keratoses. It can be used to treat pre-cancerous growths such as actinic keratoses and in limited cases even early-stage skin cancers, such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

  • Earlobe repair is a minor and effective surgery to restore appealing earlobe shape, framing your face attractively. A torn or stretched earlobe is one of the most common aesthetic deformities of the ear. They commonly occur due to wearing heavy earrings or years of wearing pierced earrings. A torn or elongated earlobe also can commonly occur due to trauma (such as a baby yanking on an earring). Wearing gauges or plugs also stretch out the earlobe.

Earlobe repair can restore the earlobe to its original shape and size. The process involves locally anesthetizing the earlobe in our outpatient office, removing the damaged skin, and reshaping the tissue to restore the natural appearance of the earlobe. The earlobe can be re-pierced about 2 - 3 months after the surgery.

  • Skin tags are small, benign growths that can appear anywhere on the surface of the skin, but most commonly develop on the neck, eyelids, groin and underarms. While skin tags are harmless, they can be bothersome and can cause discomfort due to their location. Fortunately, Dr. Nabatian can remove them with a painless procedure.
